What is the Next Generation NED Network?

The Network:

  • has around 1,100 members (with around 880 in its LinkedIn group),

  • is supported by 9 partner organisations, and

  • hosts 4 events annually.

Membership is free.

The Network is special: it has an accumulation of relationships among the partner organisations and its Board-level members built on relationships established over 10 years and a commitment to sharing of experience, learning and best practice involving the role of people with non-executive roles or the like in the listed, private company, public or charity/not for profit sectors (NEDs).

Who is the ‘Next Generation’?

The ‘Next Generation’ of people is deliberately broad. It includes people at an early stage of their career, who are aspiring to be or who have a single NED role, who want to learn about NEDs or who would otherwise benefit from participating in the Network.

It also includes experienced and long-serving NEDs, and those with fresh or different perspectives or who have different characteristics, both protected characteristics and non-protected characteristics such as cognitive and personal strengths.

How does the Next Generation NED Network work?

The Network is an informal collaboration supported by 9 leading partner organisations. The Network hosts 4 in-person events a year on topics relevant to NEDs, typically panel or small roundtable discussions with audience participation.

The Network’s hallmark is the quality/extent of the interactive discussions among the panel and with the audience or in individual roundtables, facilitated by  Charles Mayo (General Counsel, Secure Trust Bank PLC) as Chair of the Network.

PowerPoint is not needed, nor permitted. Much care is taken to have diverse panels and to invite an Advisory Board member onto the panel.

What sort of topics does the Network cover?

The sort of topics covered from the perspective of NEDs include:

  • crisis management

  • social mobility

  • the viewpoint of millennials and Gen Z

  • worker directors

  • diversity

  • effective chairing

  • NEDs and supporting LGBTQ+ colleagues

  • agreeing to disagree (well)

  • corporate treasury (for NEDs)

  • remuneration

  • predictable mistakes of Boards

  • culture

  • military aspects of corporate governance

  • NEDs and supporting neurodiverse people

  • artificial intelligence
